SCHEDULE C – DUTIES & COMPOSITION OF STUDENT COUNCIL
1. General
1.1 The purpose of Student Council is to engage students in setting Union policy and strategy.
1.2 Student Council Representatives shall set up Student Forums and encourage students to attend to discuss matters relating to their educational experience.
1.3 The outcomes of Student Forums shall be passed to Student Council for debate, policy creation and/or the resolution of issues through University structures where appropriate.
2. Meetings
2.1 The Student Council shall meet at least once per month during term time. The President shall be responsible for calling and advertising meetings to all members of Student Council.
3. Council Representatives
3.1 All elected council representatives must be members of the Students’ Union at Swansea Metropolitan University whilst they are in post.
3.2 Executive Committee members will be full members of Student Council.
4. Roles & Responsibilities of Student Council Representatives
4.1 Campus Representatives
Alexandra Road Representative, Dynevor Representative, Mount Pleasant Representative, Townhill Representative.
(I) Each campus representative must study at the campus that they represent.
(II) Each campus representative shall represent the views, needs and interests of the students from their particular campus.
(III) They will liaise with site management on any issues that arise regarding their particular campus.
(IV) They will communicate with students on Campus through student forums, electronic means, posters etc, to ensure effective participation.
(V) They will be responsible for the upkeep of the Union Noticeboards on their designated Campus.
(VI) They shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.2 Faculty Representatives
Art & Design Representative, FADE Representative, Humanities Representative.
(I) Each faculty representative must study within the faculty that they represent.
(II) Each faculty representative shall represent the views, needs and interests of students from their particular faculty.
(III) They will liase with faculty management on any issues that arise regarding their particular faculty.
(IV) They shall endeavour to communicate the outcomes of Faculty meetings to the student body.
(V) They shall work with the Union President to ensure all student places are filled on Faculty Committees.
(VI) They shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
(VII) They shall sit on the relevant faculty committees as one of the elected faculty representatives. (Faculty Board, Faculty Learning, Teaching & Assessment, Faculty Academic, Quality & Standards)
4.3 Halls of Residence Representatives
Cenydd Hall Representative, Dyfed Representative, Gwyr Representative, Mount Pleasant Halls Representative.
(I) Each halls of residence representative must live in the halls of residence that they represent.
(II) Each halls representative shall represent the views, needs and interests of students from their particular halls of residence.
(III) They shall liaise with the University Accommodation Officer on any issues that arise regarding their particular halls if residence.
(IV) They will communicate with students in Halls through student forums, electronic means, posters etc, to ensure effective participation.
(V) They shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.4 Year Representatives
Year 0/Foundation Representative, Year 1 Representative, Year 2 Representative, Final Year Representative.
(I) Each Year Representative shall represent the views, needs and interests of students from their particular year.
(II) They shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.5 Post-Graduate Representative
(I) The Post-Graduate Representative must be a post-graduate student for his/her full year of office.
(II) The Post-Graduate Representative shall represent the views, needs and interests of post-graduate students within Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall aim to keep post-graduate students informed of and engaged with the Students’ Union and the campaigns and events run by the Students’ Union.
(IV) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.6 Part-Time Representative
(I) The Part-Time Representative must be a part-time student.
(II) The Part-Time Representative shall represent the views, needs and interests of part-time students within Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall aim to keep part-time students informed of and engaged with the Students’ Union and the campaigns and events run by the Students’ Union.
(IV) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.7 Black Students’ Officer
(I) The Black Students’ Officer must be of Asian, African or Caribbean descent or otherwise self-define as a Black Student.
(II) The Black Students’ Officer shall represent the views, needs and interests of black students at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of a Black Students’ Society.
(IV) S/he shall run campaigns for black students and keep in touch with the Black Students’ campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(V) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.8 Disabled Students’ Officer
(I) The Disabled Students’ Officer must self-define as being disabled, whether it be physical or otherwise.
(II) The Disabled Students’ Officer shall represent the views, needs and interests of disabled students at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of a Disabled Students’ Society.
(IV) S/he shall run campaigns for disabled students and engage with the Disabled Students’ campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(V) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.9 LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Officer
(I) The LGBT Officer must self-define as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
(II) The LGBT Officer shall represent the views, needs and interests of LGBT students at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of a LGBT Society.
(IV) S/he shall run campaigns for LGBT students and engage with the LGBT campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(V) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.10 Women’s Officer
(I) The Women’s Officer must self-define as a female student.
(II) The Women’s Officer shall represent the views, needs and interests of female students at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of a Women’s Society.
(IV) S/he shall run campaigns for female students and engage with the Women’s campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(V) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.11 International Students’ Officer
(I) The International Students’ Officer must be student from outside of the British Isles.
(II) The International Students’ Officer shall represent the views, needs and interests of international students at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of an International Students’ Society.
(IV) S/he shall run campaigns for international students and engage with the International Students’ campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(V) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.12 Mature Students’ Officer
(I) The Mature Students’ Officer must have been over the age of 21 when embarking on their current degree.
(II) The Mature Students’ Officer shall represent the views, needs and interests of mature students at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of a Mature Students’ Society.
(IV) S/he shall run campaigns for mature students and engage with the Mature Students’ campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(V) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
4.13 Environmental and Ethics Officer
(I) The Environmental and Ethics Officer can be any student who is a member of the Students’ Union at Swansea Metropolitan University.
(II) S/he shall run environmental and ethical campaigns and engage with such campaigns at NUS Wales and NUS UK levels.
(III) S/he shall ensure and monitor the upkeep of a Environmental & Ethical Society, however named.
(IV) S/he shall engage with University Staff (including the University Environment Manager) regarding University policies and procedures relating to environmental and ethical concerns.
(V) S/he shall inform debate within the student community with regard to environmental and ethical issues / concerns.
(VI) S/he shall attend all Student Council meetings and have both speaking and voting rights during Student Council meetings.
