Council believes: That the Students’ Union (SU) puts equal opportunities and the liberation campaigns at the top of its agenda. That discrimination in any form will not be accepted by the SU. That SU meetings and events should be ‘safe spaces’ in terms of the location and nature of the meeting/event. That Students’ Union events should always be free from sexism and any other forms of discrimination Council further believes: That there has been a rise in raunch culture over the past few years, with many SUs holding events that reflect this. That such events, for example ‘Porn-star Parties’, ‘FHM parties’ and ‘Pimps and Hos Nights’, are sexist and discriminatory. That such events can lead to many students feeling extremely uncomfortable and feeling pressurised to dress in a way that makes them feel awkward and embarrassed. That such events may also offend religious groups within our student body. That such events can add to the current societal pressure for women to have ‘perfect bodies’, reinforcing the perception that what a woman looks like is more important than who she is and what she does. That such events often sexually objectify both women and men. That sexual objectification within our society effects women to a greater extent, as they do not hold as much economic and political power. That such events hold obvious links with the sex industry, where women are regarded as objects with the sole purpose of providing sexual gratification. 9) That women in the sex industry are often abused in a variety of ways (through their line of work or through relationships outside of work) due to them being regarded as objects. 10) That regardless of whether a woman ‘chooses’ to participate in such events as mentioned above, raunch culture cannot be separated from its objectifying, male-defined origins in a patriarchal, consumerist culture. 11) That when SUs hold such events, they are contributing to the continuation of the oppression on women, both practically (through objectification) and politically (through not taking a stand against it). Council resolves: To ensure that our SU does not hold events that promote raunch culture, such as ‘Porn-star Parties’, ‘FHM parties’ and ‘Pimps and Hos Nights’. To oppose the promotion of raunch culture on campus. To remove any materials that promote raunch culture from SU notice boards and premises. Word Count: 400 Passed: 30/10/07 |
